Some Scary Statistics

In this thread we are going to explore how to drink safely in college (and beyond).  We are going to talk about lots of topics including binge drinking, pre-gaming, and underage drinking.  I will share my own observations and suggestions in a non-judgmental way, and I’m hopeful that you will reciprocate.  I will also share some of the most recent research on this topic as well as observations from college students, college graduates, college professors, parents, and anyone else who is interested.

You probably know the statistics, but in case you don’t, here are some sobering ones (pun fully intended).  These statistics come from a fact sheet on college drinking published by the:

Success in College?

What does it mean to succeed in college?

Good grades? Getting a job after college? Getting into grad school, law school, med school, etc.? Expanding your horizons? Making new friends? Being mentally, emotionally, and physically well?

Of course, it’s all of the above!

Prohibition Didn’t (and Won’t) Work

When I first started working as college professor over 20 years ago, I thought that prohibition might be the answer.  Don’t allow any drinking on campus, especially among underage drinkers.   Let’s see, how did Prohibition work the first time around?  Not so great.  Seems like a psychological principle called reactance got in the way.  But more on that later.

It didn’t take me long to realize that absolute prohibition was not going to be the answer.

So what to do about unsafe college drinking?  That’s what we’re going to talk about in this blog.

Let me warn you.  There are no easy answers…but I think there are some potential solutions.
